Young Person and Parent Nature Mandala Making Course

This course is Onsite

Workshop Description:

Mandala means ‘Circle’ in Sanskrit language (an ancient language from India). However, you see mandala-like designs appear in many cultures beyond the sphere of Indian tradition. In this workshop, we will be creating mandalas (geometric patterns) using natural materials which also contain unique patterns and shapes. The geometries found in nature evoke ‘soft fascination’ in us, as opposed to the intense attention evoked by the stimuli that we are exposed in modern living. While the creative process is absorbing, it is also calming and relaxing for all ages. Repetitive act of placing leaves, handling each flower with respect, paying attention to how every twig bends uniquely…all encourages us to be present in the moment.

Creating arts with nature offers more than just visual satisfactions. It is an opportunity to explore other senses: smelling the flowers, touching the mossy twigs and hearing the birds during the creation. It is an embodied experience for young people as well as opportunities to learn about local vegetations and explore sustainable ways to create with nature.

There are no premeditated designs for our mandalas. Participants are encouraged to follow their ‘awe’ and create from the place of wonder. Everything in nature is unique, you cannot find exact same shaped leaves or stones. For that reason, it is easy to give up the idea of trying to achieve ‘perfection’ when creating with nature. In this workshop, we are here to express instead of perfect!

One of the most important parts of the workshop comes when we erase the mandalas. Our mandala is ephemeral, made with flowers and leaves. The act of letting go reminds us that nothing stays the same in this earthly life. The only constant is change. We take a moment to appreciate our time together and pay respect to the life of plants we used, and erase the mandalas together at the end of each workshop.
