Summer Interview Series 2024

This event is ONLINE

Event Details:

Join us this summer for a series of memorable conversations with people who embody our mission at the Sanctuary of nourishing personal growth in order to facilitate greater social impact. It is with great pleasure that we are offering this unique collection of interviews with four people who emphasise the role of their personal practice of stillness, contemplation and reflection in sustaining their capacity to contribute towards positive social change. The four guests will be:

Anthea Lawson

Anthea Lawson is an English activist and author with over two decades of experience of successful campaigning against bank-fuelled corruption, ecological destruction and an international ban on cluster bombs. In her writing she explores what we can learn from how we do campaigning: how our inner lives are entangled in our work to change the world. Her book The Entangled Activist: Learning to recognise the master’s tools, explores the understanding that activism often emerges from the same troubles it is trying to fix, and that its demons, including righteousness, saviourism, burnout and treating other people badly, can be a gateway to understanding the depth of what really needs to change. For the people in this world who so want to help, this book unearths a different starting point, one where transforming ourselves is inextricably linked to transforming the world.

Sr Stanislaus Kennedy

Sr Stanislaus Kennedy is an author, academic, social activist and nun. She has devoted her life to campaigning on behalf of some of the most vulnerable people in Irish society for more than 60 years and in doing so, along with many other notable contributions, founded Focus Ireland in 1985, the Sanctuary in 1998 with sister Sile Wall and the Immigrant Council of Ireland in 2001 with Social Innovations Ireland. The Sanctuary was inspired by Stan’s own personal practice of contemplation and meditation and its ability to help nourish her throughout her long career.

Ruairí McKiernan

Ruairí McKiernan is an award-winning social innovator, a bestselling author, and a campaigner on youth, mental health, and social justice issues. He is also a practicing counsellor and psychotherapist with a passion for mindfulness and meditation. Ruairí is the founder and former CEO of the SpunOut.ie youth organisation, host of the popular Love and Courage podcast, and a Fulbright scholar who previously served for 7 years on the Council of State as one of President Higgins’ nominees. His book, Hitching for Hope is a beautiful journey of discovery and community and offers a powerful message of hope for these turbulent times.

Dermot Whelen

Dermot Whelen is an award-winning Irish comedian, radio presenter, podcaster and best-selling author. Twelve years ago, although he was commercially successful, he was struggling internally. Suffering with anxiety, poor sleep and low self-esteem – he felt compelled to try meditation. After feeling the benefits from a steady practice, he decided to train as a meditation teacher. Since then, he has used his platform to promote meditation as a helpful tool to mitigate the impact of stress and anxiety can have on our lives. His book, Mind Full and podcast of the same name has resonated with a huge amount of people in Ireland and abroad, opening them up to a practice that facilitates new way of relating to themselves and their external world.

This is a fundraising event for the Sanctuary, and a special opportunity to explore our mission in detail with guests who work in different contexts but whose personal practice enables them to contribute significantly in their respective fields.
