Rediscovering Celtic Christianity October

This workshop is ONSITE

Course Description:

What we experience as Christianity today in Ireland is a pale version of a rich tradition  often only glimpsed through the stories of St Patrick and St Bridget. What got lost along the way and what would be worth re-discovering  to refresh our commitment to live a more spiritually informed life?

From the early days, Christianity in Ireland successfully fused with the fundamental Celtic view of the sacredness of nature. This perspective was viewed with suspicion by a Roman church that from the fourth century onwards was becoming a growing imperial power. The writings of Celtic British and Irish monks and scholars Pelagius and Erigena, were eventually rejected by the Roman church. In addition, the folk wisdom and reverence for the natural world associated with people like St Brigid were sidelined.

Through the writings and examples of these three figures we will explore what was lost when Celtic Christianity won out to the controlling authority of the Roman church.

The workshop will examine how a re-embracing of elements of the Celtic Christian tradition might re-invigorate the ailing Christian churches of today. In addition, mindful of the current climate crisis, it will provide some clues about how we might re-align our lifestyles to be in greater harmony with the natural world.

The workshop will include time for discussion and an experience of Celtic ritual. There will be a 30 minute break for lunch. Please bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee will be provided.

Day & Date: Sunday 20th October 2024

Time: 12pm – 4.00pm
